Lori Foster is a famous American popular fiction writer, having produced over 70 romance novels for the renowned Harlequin publishing house. Moreover, she has also contributed to the urban fantasy genre.
Foster graduated from Northwest high school in 1977 and married to her high school sweetheart. They settled in Ohio permanently and had three sons and now at the age of fifty-five she is a grandmother. After marriage she could not continue higher studies and instead started doing odd jobs as store clerk and saleslady to support her family. After having children she became a stay-at-home mother. Once she caught pneumonia and in her bedridden state she devoured dozens of romance novels that her sister brought for her. Avid romance reading stimulated a desire in her to write novels. She resolved to write romance and within five years penned ten manuscripts.
In 1996, copyright for her first novel, titled Impetuous, was bought by Harlequin. In fact, She launched Harlequin Temptation Heat series and Temptation Blaze series. Since then she has been writing with a pace that has increased exponentially. She routinely writes about six to ten novels per year. Besides Harelequin, she has worked for Kensington, Berkley and St. Martin’s publishing houses. Most of her written works are in the series format focusing on particular family tree. In 1998, she began her first romance series, The Winston Brother.
The characters of Foster’s novels are mostly alpha males and females. Foster believes in the human ability to take control of matters even when all hope is lost. Therefore, majority of her character, regardless of age and gender are equipped with a sharp sense of justice and determination. They take charge of situation and prove to be productive members of their society, which renders them to become future leaders. One example is the trio portrayed in her novel series published in 2011. The titles in the series include When You Dare, Trace Of Fever and Avor The Danger. The male protagonists featured in the series exude quintessential qualities of larger-than-life heroes. Their demeanor reflects strength, power, single-mindedness, devotion and righteousness. The male central characters of the series, Dare, Trace and Jackson, are undercover mercenaries with the single-minded pursuit of completion of their mission. Their counterpart female protagonists created by the author also come across strong and determined.
Foster claims that her favorite romance writer is Kresley Cole, author of the Immortal series. Other major influences on her work include Linda Howard, Julie Garwood, Catherine Coulter, Jayne Ann Krentz and Johanna Lindsey. In 2007, she decided to divert her attention from straight romance writing temporarily and produced an Urban Fantasy series, Servant, under the name L.L. Foster.
In addition to her other accomplishments, Foster is recognized for her considerable support of amateur writers struggling in the process of fiction writing. She has launched a contest to give others a chance of having their work read and reviewed. Over fifteen participants had their works published through her connections. In 2005, her novel, Jamie, became the national bestseller. Moreover, most of her romance novels climbed the New York Times bestseller list. Hard To Handle earned the second spot on the list. She won Romantic Times Magazine Career Achievement Award for Series Romantic Fantasy and Contemporary Romance. Lori Foster’s Urban Fantasy became Amazon’s No. 1 Editors’ Pick in romance category.
